utarid am i dead yet mock heroic aftc split - 12"

react with protest
In the past few years there has for sure been something like a screamo boom with hordes of new bands from about everywhere of which four are united on this piece of vinyl. In some way they are all representing different streams in this subscene.

Utarid from Malaysia are the of the whirlwind kind of screamo with fast riffs and a jump around tumbling one over another beat. Silent parts only as short breaks to burst out anew. I’ve seen this band live on their European tour and they kicked so much ass. There was so much enthusiasm in what they did and so much love in each of their products with 3,5” disks and hand painted covers and all. Maybe this is because the system they live in Malaysia is still far more repressive than the one we are used to here. Maybe the private and the expression of one’s self becomes more important the more you are kept quiet in public. These kids really celebrated every second of their show!

The second band is Am I Dead Yet from Belgium who play what I would call the franco-italian school of screamo. Think of bands like Belle Epoche or Raein! Quiet parts with clean guitars alternate with heavily distorted mosh infernos.

Band number three is The Mock Heroic from the UK who plays the post hardcorian type of screamo with shuffled beats and grooves plus a lot of variety. I really love the way the guitars sound here.

Last one on the list is German band A Fine Boat That Coffin who plays the jazzy, artsy kind of screamo music that in fact reaches far over the borders of this genre drawer. Complex drumming and even more complex guitars, samples and innaway political lyrics. I know why I love this band.

All this is added up with a copied lyrics sheet. Really good record to check out some bands of this genre that come from very different places. Personally I am not so fond of Am I Dead Yet but the other three bands really whip my ass. To hand a catchy slogan: perfect blend of emotion, intention and passion!  [jan]
