Ampl:tude
Ampl:tude
der igel an der orgel - cd/tape
sinnbus
froggi
Some weeks ago I stumbled over some banner showing a cuddly hedgehog playing piano or something and that referred to a youtube video of some group named Ampl:tude. I was bored so I followed the link and found myself watching the video at least three times in a row. It so cute and so funny and the song is great as well. I love the way the crocodile is jumping up and down on the sampler or drum computer or whatever.

Some days later I was happy to receive the cd of this very band so I could listen to more of their stuff. First impression was I love the artwork. Sinnbus always has these great cardboard packings and the actual cover artwork reminded me instantly and subconsciously on some vintage video game I used to play on my Amiga back in the days. Anyone remember “Escape form the Planet of Robot Monsters”? Awesome shit!

Ampl:tude make mostly electronic music at the rather lo-fi end of the scale and they got no vocals and no lyrics. However the song titles like “onkel uhu ist krank” or “die kleine katze” are great. They mix vintage casio style synths and beats with contemporary ones and by that produce a quite unique sound. They don’t really fit into any pre-designed drawer of suit any small labelling. The songs are despite an overall cohesion very different from each other. Unfortunately I can’t say that I like everything about this record. Some songs (4,5,7,8) are really good and I could listen to them over and over again but the other half of the songs doesn’t really suit my taste. “das gute alte gedöns” is a funny dance track and “darin ist er der grösste” is a very beautiful dreamy piece of electronica. Maybe the I tracks I like less simply take a little more time…

This record will also be released tape via Froggi whish is pretty damn awesome. Tapes kick ass! And the “bonus track” is a big laugh but I won’t spoil here… Don’t miss them on their with Jordan!  [jan]
