This compilation is a very twilight thing. On one hand there are some really great bands like Tomte, Maximo Park, Bloc Party, JR Ewing or The Robocop Kraus but on the other hand there are also really, really bullshit bands like Evergreen Terrace, Ektomorf, 36 Crazyfists or Caliban. Between them there are a lot of bands I don’t have an opinion about and many bands that are not necessarily bad but totally out of place on a compilation that got anything to do with dancing in some way (at least in my eyes) such as Heaven Shall Burn, Comeback Kid or Anti Flag. A last group is made up by a few songs that are intended to be classic tracks here but which I could kill every DJ or DJane for if they spin them. I am talking about shit like “gotta go” by Agnostic Front or “die all right” by The Hives. Fuck, I don’t go to events like Hörsturz all too often but it seems like these songs are played each fucking night and I cannot understand how anyone can get no immediate nausea when they hear them. These songs are for parties like these what Genesis’ “I can’t dance” is for mainstream rock radio stations: traditions that have got to be stopped by any means necessary!
In a way it really hurts me to see great songs like “helicopter” by Bloc Party on the same disc as Ektomorf, In Flames or Alexisonfire. I think this is putting together what does not belong together. It is combining ultimate indie dancefloor smashers with songs only drunk morons will shake their booties to. Well in fact they don’t even do that when the songs are played. They just act out male dominant role actions and roam around with an anger that is more fake than Tokio Hotel. If I want punk or hardcore I go into Onkel Otto or to a basement show…
Of course there is not just rubbish on these two cds. There are the good bands mentioned above along with a good dozen of other stuff that is more than okay and some cool stuff like that Test Icicles remix or Morning Runner I only got to know through this comp. I guess I just ain’t the target group of this thing. If I was 16 and my musical taste was still under way then I guess this sampler could have helped me a lot to get to know cool stuff I would not get in contact with otherwise especially if I lived in some place far off the ever pulsing metropolises. And if the stupid metalcore shit bands will get some metalcore kids to buy this double cd and by that receive some “real” music then it is absolutely okay that this waste of digital space is on there. “Real music”… That kinda sounds like my father bitching about the terrible noise I was listening to a decade ago (e.g. Slime, Nirvana, Bad Religion). Well maybe it is a thing of impossibility for older folks to like the shit that the following generation adores. And to be honest I listened to H-Blockx, Dog Eat Dog or Mr. Ed Jumps The Gun (aaaaaarrrgggghhhh!) myself when I was younger and now I got the best taste in music I could imagine. So maybe I should better shut the fuck up before I make confessions even more embarrassing… PS: I can’t believe how absolutely shitty Waterdown are! PPS: “we danced to all the wrong songs!”
