Epo-555
Epo-555
mafia - cd
crunchy frog
Up to now Copenhagen and music meant pretty much Paragraf 119, Ungdomshuset and crusty punks to me. But obviously there seems to be another Copenhagen in which a sweet kind of indie pop has its home. At least there is this one band Epo-555 that plays this kind of music.

I wonder if it is possible to describe this band’s sound without using the words Scandinavian or Scandinavia because this is the major key word popping up in my head while listening to them. The whole sound, the arrangements, the breathy singing of singer Camilla and the melancholy in the other singer Mikkel’s voice, it is all so, yes, Scandinavian. In German there is the word ‘kauzig’ which doesn’t have an appropriate English translation but means something like ‘a rather cute kind of weird’ and well, that’s what I’d call Epo-555.

There are synths and guitars, real drums and 8-bit electronic beats. Sometimes I hear a little Calexico, sometimes I hear a little contemporary British indie rock. Maybe I might call it Múm with guitars? I dunno but they are definitely living on the melancholy side of town and the neighbourhood to Sweden is also ubiquitous. I guess this is another good record for long overnight drives on lonely highways where those on the backseats are asleep while driver and co-driver communicate in silence and mutual understanding. Only their heads are nodding almost unremarkably to the beat…

After all, can a Danish band that makes it to the famous South By Southwest festival in Austin/Texas really be bad? I mean you don’t travel all the way there just to play shitty music, do you? I’d love to see them live once but the night they are in Hamburg I got tickets for Against Me! and sorry, I love that band… ^ [jan]
