Last year The 101 played at Hafenklang in Hamburg together with The Smackdown from Sweden. This evening a few of us met up there to form the concert group Pink Tank Entertainment. We were really blown away by The Smackdown but The 101… Well, it was late and if there is one thing that this band doesn’t do it is kicking ass…

But now I got their new cd here for reviewing and I really like it even if it is still not kicking ass the least bit. It is simply pretty simple emotional rock music somewhere between emo and college rock. It I true what their band info says: It is singer Eric Richter’s voice that makes the sound of this three piece. That guy used to sing for Christie Front Drive before The 101 and seems like he learns his lessons. On this record there is also a large, 80s or early 90s-like reverb on his voice which gives the whole sound something classic. If this band would have already been support for Hüsker Dü or Jawbreaker back in the days I would not wonder. Music- and soundwise this would just fit perfectly.

This is just simple pop music that is pretty much reduced to the plain songs and it works out well. I also like the simple artwork. Music for the melancholic late summer Sunday afternoons and well I guess fall might even fit a little better. So emo…  [jan]
