Menfolk
Menfolk
colossus - cd
play/rec
The reason why Menfolk are no strangers to me is that they played a show in Hamburg with Eniac and even more that this show had amazing silkscreened, cut out posters. But Eniac would be a bad point of reference simply because the two bands are quite different from each other.

Well indeed there are certain similarities in terms of their love for noise and being exceptional but there is another band I can’t avoid namedropping here: Lack. It is not only that both bands come from Copenhagen. It is also and even more that both bands have in pretty much the same way left behind hardcore/punk conventions and created something new and unique without losing the impact so characteristic for this genre. So Menfolk play grooving mid tempo posthardcore that derives its unique sound by the two basses that are played. The sound is much differentiated and especially the basses set to music the very steel their strings are made of. The whole sound is rather roomy and you almost feel the presence of the band which creates a great momentum of intensity and directness.

Spoken words alternate with angry screams and grooving riffs rotate with dodgy and more quiet parts in a stop and go. Good to see or rather hear that Copenhagen stays a city that keeps producing interesting music aloof from the always repeating and totally selfreferential crust scene.  [jan]
