At first I thought that this band has a fucking lame and thin sound. Well, at a certain point of time I realized that this band is rather a duo of drums and guitar and that the lack of a bass guitar and whatever other additional instruments is the reason for the fact I only heard guitar, drums and vocals. Pretty logical…

But still I am not really convinced by the sound. The drums are produced very direct and there is very little room in the drum sound. Especially the bass drum is too loud and the snare is sometimes pushed away by the cymbals while the guitars are often pretty lonely and could easily fill more room both sound- and volumewise. And as almost always I like the clean guitar sound far better than the distorted or in this case rather crunched sound. Still the guitarist is using some funny effects (flanger?!?) that make the sound quite diverse in a positive way.

This criticizing the sound doesn’t mean at all that the music is bad! Quite the opposite is true. It is pretty amazing how many different sounds and things only two instruments can produce. Some parts are really good like the finale of “premium prosthetics”.

So this record is not bad at all. The vexing thing is rather that with a better sound it could be a lot better. Nevertheless this record is worth a check out for all friends of music for musicians. Yes, This one will predominantly be liked by nerds. And well I guess that is what I am, a nerd… Premium check out track is the last one on side one: “sassquatch”  [jan]
