What first made me grab this 7“ was the beautiful neon yellow/neon green cover artwork. While admiring the colours I noticed that the record was one of Kurt whom I had seen in the Störtebeker/Hamburg recently and who had really blown me away. At that certain moment my buying decision was made and after the show (World/Inferno Friendship Society) I went to the distro table and bought it along with a few old fanzines. I would not be dissapointed. The two Kurt songs are good as all their stuff is, just the typical Kurt sound I love so dear. They are so damn good in mixing raw rock energy with something i cannot name that makes them really unrock. Their music simply has this certain urgency. Popular Shapes on the flipside are another band having this urgency, this aura of having something important to express, but they have their say in a far less rocking way. I would call it posthardcore, the label website speaks of artpunk. You can clearly hear their hometown Seattle in their music yet there is a dash of San Diego and a spoon full of Omaha. I guess this discription is ridiculous so I end it right here. Sometimes you simply like music and you don't know why. I like this band and I like Kurt and after having listened to it five times in a row now I am more than sure I like this 7“. [jan]
