A friend of mine handed this one to me and said I might write about it if I liked it. Well, I did and so I do.
There is really a huge amount of singer/songwriters around these days and it is very much questionable if anyone needs them really. Another friend of mine would say “hell no! this invasion must be stopped!” but I am a little less radical. Of course there is a lotta crap around but isn’t that the same thing with everything? There is so much bad coffee made but that won’t keep me from enjoying the good ones. And isn’t coffee quite the same thing as music? What a stupid metaphor…
Alright, let’s get back to work and stop writing shit. The guy behind this thing named Comforting really got something special and this is his voice. I’ve never heard anyone else having such a deep, charmingly fucked up voice like this except for Tom Waits who is off limits and beyond question. This unique voice is lifting this recording above the grey matter of one man bands of our days. Backing himself with acoustic guitars, choirs and electrified leads this musician creates a music that is indeed, as the name does promise, comforting. It feels good to listen to it and the passion shining out of every single detail of this thing makes it even more loveable. The packaging, he did himself, the lyrics, the self-copied cd with the self-stamped C on it, this is truly d.i.y. This feels like someone does really identify with what he does and this is what so many singer/songwriters are lacking on their ego trips. There is so much darkness in this but it is a darkness that feels good like it is embracing you rather than eating you up. It is a shining darkness, a comforting one. I could even imagine Tom Waits would not kill me for comparing this to his work for this is almost as unique as his own music…
