Only Crime
Only Crime
virulence - cd/lp
fat wreck
Holy fucking shit! The members of Only Crime have an impressive list of bands they are or were in. Singer Russ Rankin is known best for singing in Good Riddance and drummer Bill Stevenson got even more to impress as he got Descendents, All and Black Flag to offer. The other two guys were recruited from Hagfish and one has also been in Gwar (yeah!).

So what can be expected of such a centre of excellence? Well, I guess some high quality punk rock with a strong west coast edge. And, surprise surprise, this is pretty much what we get. Plain punk rock. No experiments, no gimmicks, no tricks and well no innovation and nothing new at all. Personally I don’t know why I should waste my life on listening to this. Time is a limited resource after all… But it doesn’t hurt either. I listened to it twice while vacuum-cleaning my room and I was fine with it. Rankin got a good feel for hook lines and the instrumentalists know how to make good punk rock.

One thing I learn from this record is that the revolution will not listen to punk rock. But will there ever be a revolution? Many boys on gymnasiums and high schools will like this and its their good right to do so. This is a solid release. I am just bored of dogmatic punk rock. The only hc/punk band that could really touch me in the last few months is Comadre. They are so great and inspiring and I’m looking forward to their euro tour. I think the major problem is that Only Crime just want to play music and maybe have a good time instead of creating something special, something new, something extraordinary. Punk without rebellion is nothing but rock music and entertainment…  [jan]
