Maserati
Maserati
inventions for a new season - 2lp/cd
golden antenna
This is a review about a band whose tour is presented among others by the magazine Eclipsed. I think their current issues cover is Grateful Dead… This is quite a shock for me but I am old enough to know that psychedelic music isn’t always the enemy.

In fact I did already know Maserati. An older record of this US band used to lie in a heap of cds next to the boombox in some certain shared flat’s kitchen and so I got to listening to it more than once while eating breakfast. I could imagine worse situations for listening to them than a sunny Sunday morning sweetened with self-made croissants and soy cocoa. This band could easily be described as being “easy like Sunday morning”…

Their instrumental rock music is anti-hectic yet highly energetic, fully awake but not completely present. The band is taking the time needed to evolve each song to its fullest. Guitars are meandering and delay is going strong. On sing number one it takes exactly six minutes until the real drumbeat is launched. The band combines early 1970s psychedelia trippiness with the straightness music never had before the punk explosion. Can I say postprog? I’d like this label. Where The Mars Volta is losing itself in krautrock nirvanas, Maserati are always forward-looking. Forget that breakfast comparison! This band sounds like a overnight drive on an empty motorway under a full moon with everyone else in the car asleep and you, the driver, pumped up on four bottles of Club Mate.

They’ll be on a killer tour with Ostinato that will unfortunately not stop in Hamburg. This is one of the promos that I am really thankful for!  [jan]
