Some records/cds sound strange in a way. The cd version of “kuddel” sounds a little too stereo on my home stereo while it sounds just perfect on the little boombox in the kitchen. The vinyl however sounds great when played in my room on the very same stereo. I’m no sound engineer but I think this got something to do with the quite extreme stereo the guitars are mixed in and the way I put up my speakers. Anyway this way of mixing makes very much sense here because both guitars do rarely play the same things. Very often both guitars and the bass are playing three different lines that build one big harmony. Right, this is more than just the simple three chords!
Matula succeeded in creating a charming mix of indie/emo/pop and punk. The melodies, the lyrics, the brilliant guitars shout indie, yell pop and scream emo but the trashy drums, the straight up bass and the honestly imperfect vocals keep it all down to the punk we love. Most bands fail in writing emotional lyrics in german. Either they sound like überromanticism or read like 9th grade grammar school pseudopoetry. But Matula remain unembarrassing. Still youth enough to take it serious and refrain from cynicism but grown enough to know how to really articulate their feelings.
I really love it. Good songs, good lyrics, great label, overwhelmingly beautiful guitars and beautiful extra vocals by Captain Planet’s Arne who is also accountable for the amazing artwork. And if you choose the vinyl version, make sure to read what’s carved in the run-out. It’s some sort of riddle concerning the last song on the record... Big recommendation!
