Man vs Nature
Man vs Nature
mould <> mould - cd
saftkugler
Man versus Nature from Cologne are a weird thing.

I’ve listened to “mould <> mould” quite a few times now and I can’t say I’m not fascinated but even more I am puzzled. Each of the 13 songs sounds different but none of them is pop or anything easy to label. It’s like New Weird America minus the folk or Sonic Youth without the rock maybe. Very experimental and pretty far out stuff and they are using a lot of different sources of noise for just a trio.

The saxophone every now and then reminds me of Countdown To Putsch or Text. If I knew more about free jazz I could surely drop some more impressive names here but anyway… All in all this record would fit brilliantly into that thing called No Wave back in the 80s. I could very well imagine some of this on one of the “new york noise” compilations. Noise is generally a good term for many things going on here. Apart from the roomy drums and the wiry bass most instruments and the vocals, too, are producing rather noise than sound. Maybe you could label it as a mix of Black Dice and Eniac…

Since long I’ve been one of those people who think revolutionary music should not only have revolutionary content but also a revolutionary form. This is damn much the case here! I guess with a broader philosophical background I could also write a lot about dissolution of form or deconstruction here but I can’t. Sorry. But this is a good and interesting record! Great start for the new and promising Saftkugler label…  [jan]
