When I first saw the cover and read the bandís name on it I feared having to review yet another mediocre bullshit pseudo-emotional metalcore record. If I had read the record title, too, my fears would have vanished. The title is just awesome!

The band is actually just a duo of a drummer and a pianist who are both singing as well. However it took me a look at the info to realize this. With the help of a lot of effects like reverb and distortion they sound like a lot more at some points of the record. The band is working with strong dynamics and a lot of silent-loud-antagonisms. It is atmospherically dense and musically abstract. In some way it is the absolute realization of the slogan ďreduce to the max!Ē.

Iíd call it an ambitious trip hop-jazzcore-fusion. Itís all pretty artsy but it definitely has relevance and itís cool to have some bands or projects keeping tearing down the walls between all these musical genres musicologists invented. If you are down with The Liars, Black Dice or John Zorn you should not let The Scarabeusdream pass by without taking notice.  [jan]
