So I don’t know anything more than what is written in the booklet and on the backcover of this cd. The booklet tells me that this is an instrumental bass-drums-guitar-trio from Italy and shows me a lot of pictures of how to fry fish. Not exactly what I need to know but anyway… This record was released through Jazzcore inc. and well that’s pretty much exactly what I would call Squartet’s music: Jazzcore with big Jazz and small core.

The whole record got an hectic, jazzy vibe and there is a whole lot of music happening. However it is too weird for what is called jazz today. It relates to jazz the way Meshuggah relate to bay area thrash metal. I guess the old farts in our local jazz club Birdland would react on this like the people reacted on bebop the first times they heard it. But time has proved Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker right and it’d better do the same with Squatet. In some way it is the kind of “wild jazz” I was looking for all the time. I really like it. However I don’t like the extra vocals on the last track. But this makes still eleven great songs to enjoy. I hope there is more bands like this one out there and I also hope I will come across them some day. If you like Off Minor or John Zorn or stuff like that you should check this out.
