The Flatliners
The Flatliners
the great awake - lp/cd
fat wreck
A band from Canada named after a movie with Julia Roberts that I only tried to watch once as a teenager. But it was night and a thunderstorm outside and I was too afraid after a few minutes so I switched to another channel… I only wonder if the company with the rights to the movie won’t come and sue the band. or could I come and call my band The Dirty Dancing without any law trouble?

The cover looks very cliché but I like boomboxes so I don’t care. The song that got a video (“eulogy”) is rather boring. A very safe early Sum41 song with a little more guts. I would have chosen “these words are bullets”. That one really got hit potential. Maybe next time.

The band plays solid melodic punk rock that could be favoured by My Chemical Romance pseudo emos just as much as by friends of Bouncing Souls and similar bands that might have been called skatepunk in the 1990s. I guess fans of Anti-Flags will dig’em, too. That’s fine. It’s an okay record with a good production, good bass licks and some cool singalong backings. There is some good reggaesque moments I cherish. All in all not bad but a little too polished for my taste but I am almost ten years older than the average member of this band so what can I say. I’m just a boring old fart.  [jan]
