American Steel has already been around in the 1990s but back then I didn’t recognize them at all. Now they are back with a new record on Fat Wreck. Usually I hate all kinds of reunions because they tend to be only about making money and destroying all credibility a band or ist members once had. Anyone seen Fearless Vampire Killers aka. Pseudo-Crop Mags? That’s what I mean… Most bands have good reasons when they decide to call it quits.
I don’t know why American Steel went on hiatus in 2002 but somehow their reunion seems less ridiculous to me than others. They come back with a real new album and the songs are not so bad at all. Nothing special indeed but at least “mean streak” is a real hit with its awesome singalong chorus. I also like that they sing “no gods, no masters” on the chorus of the album’s opening track “sons of avarice”. It’s kinda sad but statements like these are needed in hc/punk today. Thumb up for that! And double thumbs up for the record title! Love it…
This record contains roughly 35 minutes of fine emotional melodic punk with emotional as in Dag Nasty or Jawbreaker and not like in myspace.com/xcutmywristsandcryx. A warm production and maximum singalongs. I like it. Thanks to Renke of Zeitstrafe for recommending this band.
