Fitzcarraldo by Werner Herzog and with Klaus Kinski is a movie I always wanted to see but always hesitated because I feared it could be too dry and artsy. And with it’s 158 minutes it is also quite long as well. Fortunately this cd by a band with the same name is not as long but still quite a chump.
The band is playing an atmospherical mix of postrock and posthardcore that is pretty good. Imagine At The Drive-In and The Mars Volta combined. They play around a lot with loud and quiet dynamics and they got beautiful melodies and harmonies. However there is two things I dislike. One thing is the thankfully rare double bass attacks and then that seem a bit out of place to me. Could just as well be a problem of the production because they sound shitty in the kick-leaning sound they have. The other thing is the distorted vocals every now and then that sound like a pig is getting slaughtered. No offence but the instrumental parts just sound way better.
The band is best in its more quiet moments and has a lot of ideas they try to pack into roughly fifty minutes. Not overwhelming but pretty fine and much more interesting than many other bands that don’t even try to create something individual.
