The Sea And Cake
The Sea And Cake
everybody - lp/cd/mp3
thrill jockey
"everybody" is the first record in four years for The Sea And Cake, the forbearers of so called intellectual pop music. Listening to the new album makes me shake my head again about the tag "intellectual", the band often got and which is hawked in this review, too. This misleading mark the Chicago band only get for their member's involvement in post-rock inaugurators Tortoise. In contrast to them TheSea And Cake's music was never intended to be conceptual. Still, the new album points out the subtle influx of the omni-present Chicago experimentalism as well as the attempt to create pleasant and relaxed pop tunes. "everybody" starts with tolling dual guitar - melodies and driving drums of "up the crutches", mimicking the band's live sound. In the same vein "crossing line" surprises with energetic fuzz rock. Other songs like "middlenight" and "coconut" are emphasizing warm, melancholic indie pop instead. A notable break is "exact to me", which stuns with it's jittery rhythm recalling african tribalism. Totally outstanding in the context of the album, is the brooding feedback on "left on" which suddenly lets a driving, psychedelic song evolve, which equally abrupt fades out. "transparent" is a pleasing outro, as it formulates the quintessence of this record. To cut a long story short, despite the outlined eclecticism "everybody" is a pure pop album. It will please the serious listener, who enjoys the experimentalism - i.e. the subtle breaks, shifts, includes and interleaves - buried deep inside of the songs, as well as the cursory hearer, who enjoys the polished sound. Nevertheless, serious listening is the condition for not being bored too fast by The Sea And Cake's sweet shine. [phillip]
