Raveonettes return with their most sinister piece of work to date. A dull ambiance lingers through the whole scope of the album’s twelve songs, even if they are upbeat and positive. “aly walk with me” sets the tone for the fallowing songs: The songs begins with a single bass line and a minimal guitar melody caressing Sune Rose Wagner’s chill voice, while it ends buried in whooshing and roaring feedback. Songs like “hallucinations” and “lust” emphasize more the pop side of the Danish band, evoking Californian psychedelia or British garage beat. Still, the melancholia retains – or to cite the singer: “I’ll ride these roads alone / beneath a sulfur sky”. The rest of the record resembles an imaginative jam between Jesus And Mary Chain, Bauhaus and the Yardbirds. This means lots of feedback, an icy atmosphere and a handful of garage pop intermezzi, which results in the intensive and enriched contrast “lust lust lust” lives on. The loss of the contract with their former major label Columbia has affected audibly the Raveonettes’ sound for the better. As the album was recorded with a low budget in the singer’s home it does best in formulating a broken down garage atmosphere. Finally the band succeeds sound- and musicwise in communicating their concept, so that the listener enjoys the subtle beauty as well as the gentle mourning the songs bear. [phillip]
