Once again I got an album of an unconventional singer/songwriter. The only person behind Birthmark is Nate Kinsella who is primarily known of his past bands Joan Of Arc and December Architects. Because of being a passionate collector of all kinds of instruments Nate sang and played all the multi-instrumental songs by himself as he did with most of the recordings.
Without external boundaries from additional band members the becoming of „the layer“ retarded over four years. During the long period of the recordings the songs had the possibility to alter and to redefine themselves over and over again. As a result we get a multi-faceted full-length of nine songs between oblique indierock, folk and experimental pop. Because of being constantly calm every different song fits perfect in the complete works however they vary among each other. Unfortunately the truly interesting result brings along some problems. Due to musical variations the quality level of the songs ranges from being very good to just being average. There are one or two of the nine songs I really like while the rest remains to be background music.
From late december 07 to mid january 08 Nate will be on tour in Europe together with his backing band. For details check our dates section. [benni]
