There is a lot of moments at shows or while browsing through message boards that make me think hc/punk is fucking dead or at least plain bullshit. However there is still bands whose shows or records will always cheer me up again and give me back my deep and immortal love for this music, my belief that it really can be more than music. One of these bands is Tackleberry.
I know some of the guys in the band for many, many years and I know the bands they played in before this one. They weren’t bad but something must have changed fundamentally in their heads when starting Tackleberry. From the start they were an explosion on stage and every single time I saw them they had improved extraordinarily. They put out a demo and two splits, underwent a couple of line up changes and played more shows in more countries in the past two years than my own former band played in their more than ten years of existence. Now they come around with their first real full length and what can I say: it’s a blast!
Some might argue that it is just hardcore. Nothing new, nothing special. Well, maybe. But hardcore has never been about reinventing the wheel. It has always been about energy and speaking your mind, expressing yourself. At least that’s what it has always meant to me… Tackleberry got this energy and they got shitloads of it. From the first chord to the last they kick ass with the oversized shoes of circus clowns. They combine great singalongs and variability in tempo with simple but catchy songwriting and superb hidden harmonies in the guitars à la Raised Fist or Comeback Kid. Just lovely…
What really impressed me was the lyrics that are far above the genre’s average. Without ever falling into the trap of preaching or whining they take a radical political stance and express a lot of personal feelings. “me and the pistkit” is best new hardcore song I’ve heard in months, a true classic to come, and the lyrics are like a manifesto. I hope nobody witnesses me fingerpointing in front of my laptop each time I play it…
On a scale of one to ten I’d give it a twelve! Awesome to the max!
