Fiya
Fiya
better days - 12"/cd
obscurist press
no idea
When I say that Fiya come from Gainesville/Florida and that the new 12“ was partly released by No Idea you already got a quite good imagination of what to expect. Against Me!, Hot Water Music and Army of Ponch are not only close to them geographically. There must be something in the air over there. But compared to the others Fiya are way more hardcore in an 80s sense. They are snottier and more aggressive in some way. The melodies are just as catchy but the way they are screamed (until you're coughing up blood...) gives same a rather casual beauty. Good lyrics also, especially „new dog“ is so wise. It is all so personal and by being that honest a giving such a deep insight into lives not lived by common rules and still dealing with the same problems it is so political. In a world where every fucking lovesong uses the same fucking vocabularies simply expressing what you really feel and screaming it out without using worn out metaphors about fire, ashes, blood or chill seasons of the year means a lot. At least to me and my friends... To accommodate objectivity I might also say that we (i.e. my band) toured with Fiya for five days this summer and got to know them as five of the nicest people we ever met. So now you got two opportunities. Call this nepotism or convince yourself by listening to this record and reading the lyrics. It's up to you! [jan]
