On their second full-length Thoughts Paint The Sky create their own acoustic emocore with german and english lyrics based on the emo sound of the mid-90ies. Through using acoustic instruments the generated sound is much clearer than we used to know it from the Gravity school in the 90ies and also the singing dominates unfamiliar over the instruments. Nevertheless on „schlicht & ergreifend“ the calm and affirmatory parts of the songs are always defeated by the returning desperation. Consistently over the 10 songs there is an encounter of singing and shouting.

„schlicht & ergreifend“ is a solid release by a young german band. What bothers me on this release is this artificially attached despair. Seemingly at any costs this band tries to be „emo“ which in this case means to be desperate! Even though the band does not explicitly use the term „emo“. However Thoughts Paint The Sky don't seem to figure how to be emotional without being melancholic.  [benni]
