Berlin’s finest bass clarinet-core band No Nebraska! is back with a new cd. First impression: I love the artwork. If it was possible I would hug it! Second impression: music still good but can’t be hugged, either :(
No Nebraska! are still playing dodgy posthardcore in the vein of rather indie and progressive bands like I don’t know… The bands that come to my mind don’t sound at all like this band. It is rather their vibe, I guess. I think of The Van Pelt, Quix*o*tic or Slant 6 and other simpatico bands that tend to jump out of every drawer you stick them into. It might be unfair to categorize this band by its unique line-up with guitar, drums and bass clarinet but this is totally what sets them apart. With a bass guitar instead of a bass clarinet playing the very same notes they would simply be one good posthardcore bands among many. They would still be great but they would not be the unique band they are now. There should be more bands with non-standard instruments. Actually there should be so many bands with such instruments that there ain’t no standard anymore…
Until then No Nebraska! may take advantage of there exotism bonus and perhaps they’ll even inspire others to go more experimental about what instruments they use. Nine songs in less than 25 minutes full of brilliant guitar licks and lots and lots of groove. Track 8 “so” has hit potential, especially its vocals. Although they remind me a little of “winnetou” or “the good, the bad and the ugly” ;) Absolutely recommended and I hope I’ll see them live one day.
