Shokei’s „painkiller“ 12“ is an ambivalent thing. One side features five all new songs while the flipside got a re-recording of the older song “hot topic” along with four remixes/covers of the song by Eve Massacre, GTUK, Petethepiratesquid and Bullensack. Good idea in theory but sadly in theory only…
The four new version (three electronic ones and one in good ole western style) are not bad per se. they are rather pretty good but at least for me personally it is just boring listening to the same song five times in a row no matter how distinct the interpretations might be. The flipside is not really bad but in comparison with the a-side it totally stinks. The new material is just so much better. Hectic, pressing posthardcore. James Brown covers Minuteman in the post-modern age. Good guitar riffs and bass licks fuelled with a lot of groove, intense vocals and on the point songwriting. That Shokei are an amazing live band should be general knowledge by now anyway. And a good thing about vinyl is that you can easily ignore one side if you don’t like it. And five excellent songs are still way above the average. Now I only have to overcome that I always get cravings for chocolate when I hear their name ;)
