This record annoys me. A with former members of Leatherface and The Mercury League should definitely have some potential but this is just rock. The info says something about “regressive rock” and that’s pretty close to the truth. Former Cell Mates combine all the things hc and punk had successfully overcome previously. Too long songs with endless repetitions meet too many solos and rocker poses.
I truly adore a lot of alcoholic punk rock like Hot Water Music or The Sainte Catherines but that doesn’t mean that I like everything that bears this brand. Former Cell Mates are too polished and too much bar rock for me. Yes, they have a beautiful overall sad aura about them but their rock lacks the punk… It’s not bad. That’s not the point. There is just sooo many similar bands that are a lot better. So if you got every record by The Gaslight Anthem, Ringers, Latterman, the bands mentioned above and the like and you still want more, go and check out Former Cell Mates. If you are a real Leatherface aficionado you should do so anyway. Everyone else should waste their time on other bands…
