I really like instrumental post rock and tried to get into this record. However after several attempts I failed. Obviously North comply every shibboleth of this genre: a massive vinyl weight, plain artworks on bulky cardboard and at times their songs refer to elements of renowned Explosions In The Sky or Pelican. Looking on this release more precisely the white artwork seems to be so dull, the impressing artworks of similar artists surly bring along a double weight (and a double price for sure!). While listening to the record I partly spot great moments on it, sadly few moments later the sound collages drifts to an undefined sound capot. To me it feels like a lack of emotions inside. While other bands create an atmosphere with almighty and precise sound collages North come along with a less filed sound and more harsh production. North might be more influenced by His Hero Is Gone?! I don't know, to me the concept of this release doesn't work out. In most cases of instrumental post rock it's the precise and clear instrumentation that makes a band work without a singer. [benni]
