Tough Tough Skin call their music “queernerdcore” and that’s the best way you can put it. This Minneapolis-based quartet plays melodic punk rock with strong guitar leads, great hooks and tons of melodies. I also love the trashy bass sound and the multiple vocals are lovely. My fave is the very first song with the awesome “yellow yellow green blue purple” singalong part and the incredibly catchy lead guitar.
This band definitely doesn’t need some sort of queer exotism bonus to gain significance. After all queerness should be nothing exotic anyway, right? However it is a good thing that labels like Queer Control push bands like Tough Tough Skin and help promoting queer bands. In a bigot society still full of homophobia and shit in general being outspoken is an important thing.
Back to the band itself. I just checked back and on their photos only one of them is wearing glasses. The others should go see the eye specialist. You can’t possibly sound so nerdy (in the good meaning of the word) without needing glasses! Very good record full of gems. Only point of criticism might be that 17 songs are a little too much. At least for me. Well, they all add up to only little more than forty minutes but forty minutes is already quite a lot in the world of punk, isn’t it?
