Matula and Captain Planet beware! Your shared throne in the kingdom of emotional punkrock in german language is in danger.
Mikrokosmos 23 are fishing in the same lake as the bands mentioned above. Yet they style is pretty distinct. What unites all three bands is the honest way they put their emotions into songs and their hand for good hooks and melodies. But where Matula tend to indie and Captain Planet show their roots in classic 90s melodic punk Mikrokosmos 23 are way more emo (in the old sense of the word). Their songwriting is dominated by strong dynamics and rhythmic breaks while the vocals shift between singing and screaming. I sense influences from bands like Thursday and their contemporaries as well as some screamo additives. Mixed with lots and lots of emotion and spirit it all blends to an idiosyncratic brand of fuck-let’s-just-call-it-emo. Let’s reclaim the word from the teenage fashion victims!
I’m sorry it took me so long to review this record. It is already out since April and I’ve been listening to it ever since I got it. And I really, really like the record title! It’s good to see that in the garden of d.i.y. there are always new flowers growing. Flowers may wither and die but the garden remains.
