going to the bone church - cd |

The third album of Tim Kinsella and Sam Zurick latest instalment Make Believe leaves me uninspired to write a single sentence. It seems that nearly everything has been written about the trademark sound which the band members evolved over the years through countless Cap N Jazz, Joan of Arc, Friend/Enemy or Owls records. And again „going to the bone church“ is about subverting the common pop format. This time as a mere rock-ish variation Make Believe still works on the principal wherein any fetching guitar riff, killer bass line, or cogent drum part must dissolve into chaos before it becomes too meaningful. As any other Tim Kinsella / Sam Zurich collaboration this record is a collection of songs cramped with jingling, off-key guitar chords, knotty song structures, out of tune singing and some proto funk leanings. As a decent record which has its interesting moments, it disappoints on the long run, as the band is hooked on the postrock clichés they invented in the late nineties. Finally listening to these songs leads me to the question if the release policy of these dudes is functioning. I guess not and would like to give them the advice that less is still more and quality should still control quantity. [phillip]
