after the bleep - cd |

It’s the punk scene’s unwritten law that if a band active in the queer / feminist scene is about to play loud rock music it will launch a record like “after the bleep”. Like many others Blockshot follows suit riot grrrl’s omnipresent archetypes Bikini Kill, Team Dresch or Sleater Kinney for rehashing a sound to be played on ladyfests, in squats or demos. So the guitar strums, the bass buzzes, the drums roll while a half pissed half chilled female voice tops the musical framework. Simple but effective but still far from being trivial the nine songs on this album start and stop, ring and shrill, rock out and let go. As songs like “mr. professional stalker” explore pop territory by meandering guitar and bass melodies others like “the waiter” rock out in an almost classic girl punk tradition. Musicwise the album is more than convincing. Though everybody owning more than one of the classics Blockshot refers to must agree on that “after the bleep” would have been a lot more interesting if it wouldn’t wear its musical influences so obviously on it’s sleeve.
