If you read my reviews regularly you will know that I am pretty bored by today’s hardcore scene. You might even speak of a real aversion. However there is still some exceptions, some bands that don’t suck. Basically there is two types of bands that don’t suck in hardcore today. Type A is those powerful and more or less political bands that still make a stand, bands like Deny Everything, Verse or Tacklebery. Type B is the bands that followed the trail of American Nightmare/Give Up The Ghost and turned hardcore into something dark and dangerous, bands like Modern Life Is War or Sinking Ships. Defeater belong into the latter category.

I mean, just take a look at the cover art. How awesome is this for a hardcore band?! And the whole artwork is full of this kind of photos. It reminds me a little bit of Bruce Springsteen-like social romanticism but that’s nothing bad. I love the Boss! And the hidden folky track before track seven: wow! Negative yet powerful hardcore at its best. I hope I’ll never see this band live. I hate hardcore shows and it will surely destroy what I like in this band. Recommended!  [jan]
