Amathea hail from Gislaved/Sweden and their 7“ comes out on the mega nice label ape must not kill ape records from switzerland. Mariann who runs this label handed me this record at a show my band Kurhaus played with her (awesome) band Mr. Willis of Ohio in Homburg/Saarland. What a great concert that was. All bands kicked ass (Escapado were the third on board), there was a lot of dancing and we got to know some really nice people both from Saarland and Switzerland.
Soooo let's get back to this record... Amalthea play some kind of screamo hardcore with strong dynamics between loud, chaotic and quiet, melodic parts. Their homepage says they have played less than ten shows up to now which is quite shocking as they are good and play a style that is damn en vogue nowadays. They match excellently with bands like La Quiete or Raein but with a little more melodic singing in the vein of Yaphet Kotto if you want another name dropped.
So this record is really good and it gets better the louder you play it. The only problem I have with it is that I don't anything specific that singles the band out of the armada of similar bands who run around these days but that is okay with me. Up to now most of this subgenre's output is better than average and the last track on this 7“ „hidden scent“ is really great. So for all fans of contemporary screamo this is a tip! And let's hope they will intensify their live activities... [jan]
