Tocotronic
Tocotronic
pure vernunft darf niemals siegen - lp/cd
l'age d'or
Somewhere between „k.o.o.k“ and „tocotronic“ the band went through a serious change, changing grungy outfit against stylish suit and lofi understatement against the grand gesture of artsy pop. To be honest I didn't like that change, I wanted to keep my beloved „hamburger schule“-heroes whose first records ment so much to me. By now I get the point of these changes. The new records makes clear what they were aiming to, what they wanted to express or to achieve. Having added a second guitar to their lineup they come straighter than ever. The guitars on this records are simply brilliant, every attack cuts like a razor blade and the songs are just as great. „aber hier leben nein danke“, the opener, is the most angry piece of pop music I have heard for a long period of time. The right „fuck you“ to the new national pop avantgarde in germany at just the right time. Without screaming a single time Dirk von Lowtzow expresses so much anger that I'm simply overwhelmed by it. But this isn't the only serious hit on this album. Others may be the pompous title track or the bitter sweet „der achte ozean“. Toctronic now are a different band than Tocotronic ten years ago. If you manage to distinguish this you can quickly fall in love with this record. At least I did so... [jan]
