We played a show with Shut The Fuck Up in Potsdam early this year and I remember the band as a bunch of really nice guys that playes kinda oldschool hardcore. Not really something special but somehow they have an enormous punch and seriously kick ass.
Now they have a 12“ with nine songs out and of course I got my hands on it as soon as I saw it at the Green Hell stand at the Bane show in Bremen. The guy at the stand told me that the version I have, the one with the red cover, would be limited. So I don't really konw how those with the white cover look like but my onesided vinyl got a beautiful splatter print on the flipside that alone would be worth the purchase. So if you see a copy with a red cover you'd better pull the record out of the sleeve and watch it!
The music is as mentioned above some sort of oldschool hardcore and I like it. The lyrics are scenerelated or about social criticism which often comes from a personal point of view. The english isn't always perfect but to this has a certain charme and to be honest I doubt that anyone understands too much of what singer Dave is shouting without reading the lyrics, so who cares? The song „i hate my job“ has a really nice sinalong and I'd call it the hit song of this record. I also like that there two songs against tough guy shit and similar crap polluting the hc/punk scene nowadays („step back“ and „fed up“). Of course this has already been said a lot of times before but as some will never learn there will always be a need for repetition.
For me this is one of the best oldschool hardcore releases this year. It covinces with its energy and its honesty and I hope that this record will finally get Shut The Fuck Up the recognition they deserve. And by the way I love the fact that the abbreviation STFU is so similar to SNFU but I guess that is just my stupid kind of humor... [jan]
