I’ve seen the Lovekill live once when they played with Army of Ponch in Hamburg a few years back. I liked them pretty much and bought their cd on Requisite Records. Now they are back and touring Europe again and they also got a new label. Their new haven is Astro Magnetics, the label of Thursday singer Geoff Rickly. The new stuff was recorded in Omaha with Stephen Pedersen of Criteria fame. Makes a hell of a namedropping in this first paragraph, eh?
But there is more about this band and the ep I am to write about here than just big names. Pedersen did a really good job here. The sound is enormously dense and warm and each instrument got enough room to breathe while the outcome as a whole as still very compact. But what serves the best sound if the songs that sound do suck? Fortunately this is not the case here. The song material is good and especially the title track “sleepover” got hit potential. Bass and drums form a pumping rhythm section, the guitars, massively divided into the two stereo channels, play hooky leads and the vocals become great every time bassist Carla Cherry gives lead singer Chris Rager backups creating beautiful vocal harmonies.
I don’t really know if this band is outstanding and if you really need it but nevertheless they are good and if you like club compatible indierock with a let’s say Hot Water Music edge than you might love this and if you don’t like the song “sleepover” then I can’t help you either... You better check them out on their tour throughout Europe January 06!
