I think for quite a while Analena were in people’s minds like “the one good band from Croatia”. Of course this is bullshit as there is a vital scene down there what does the ordinary central to western European hardcore kid know about that? Well finally there is Moonlee Records from Slovenia working their asses off to bring their bands, which are all from former Yugoslavia, the attention they deserve. One of which is Analena who may not be the one good band from Croatia but who cannot deny the laurel wreath of being indisputably the best one.
Like only few other bands they managed to create their very own style of hardcore, to be unique. Well maybe it is not exactly hardcore what they are playing. Maybe this label is too small. Maybe we should call it posthardcore but somehow they just kick much more ass than most bands operating under this brand. But all the melodies and the walls of guitars are just overwhelming. And check out the straight schrammeled bass on “spilt milk”. That is so great. You can really melt my heart with a bass sound like this. The songs on “carbon based” are just as diverse as they are all together brilliant. Sometimes punkrocking, sometimes grooving, sometimes swaying but always intense, full of melodies and goose flesh beautiful. And they really come from Croatia? – Shut the fuck up! No matter where they may come from I hope so much that they will finally make their way to Hamburg so I can see and feel this live!
The only problem I have is that I don’t know if I’d like them just as much if they had a male singer. Is there something in my unconsciousness that says “female fronted band --> use special standards!” I hope not because that would make me an excellent asshole. Maybe this question arises just because indeed this music would not work with any other singer than this Ana singing here. It is just perfect and with any other singer (including the possibility of a male one) is would be something different. Perfect adaptation of special qualifications that is. Just like the Greek football team 2004. And they won the European championship, didn’t they?
