The Lawrence Arms are one of the bands I never cared about. I still remember some friends going steep on their second to last album they released 2003 but honestly I didn’t give a fuck about them back then. I guess I had my reasons but from today’s point of view I cannot see them. This is just that perfect type of alcoholic punk rock that normally comes out on No Idea. A lot of melody, a lot of verve, hymnal refrains and a heart still beating in just the right place, that’s what it is.
If I would be drinking I would really like to have a beer now. So I can only point my middle fingers in the air and sing along. Of course there is not a single chord on this record that hasn’t been played by a million punk bands before and this no reinvention of anything but who fucking cares when there are smashers like “recovering the opposable thumb” that only hardhearted people or civilians can deny at least nodding their heads to?
Sometimes it is just so unimportant if a band is innovative or whatever. Sometimes it is completely okay if they just have brilliant songs to sing, some stories to tell and the guts to shout it all out loud.
