A few months ago our concert group got asked if we wanted to do a show with a band called Genetiks. We all listened to the song “bello” on the internet and decided better not to. Well I still don’t like that song too much but if they had posted any other song from their debut record there is quite a chance that we would have made the show because this band is really good and which is even more important: It is unique!
Okay, of course I have to bring up the comparison to The Robocop Kraus that everyone brings up since both bands are from Germany, play dancy indie rock with keys involved and recorded in the same studio. Still this comparison is rather shallow. If The Robocop Kraus were the Tom Jones of german indie rock Genetiks might be the Tom Waits. There is some darkness in their sound and there is a lot of dirt in their lyrics. The music is pretty much pushing forward and always a few bpm over average dancefloor level. Hard hitting drums, laminar synths and a rhythmic string section give this piece a lot of power while the vocals are somewhat the most sexual ones ever sung by male singers in german indierock. Strange but sexual and disturbing in some way…
Maybe they could be called a synth version of Trend or something. Anyway this band is worth checking out and if we will be asked again to do a show with them I will vote for them in our internal plenum. Period.
